The Truth About Sun-In

The Truth About Sun-In

Brad SmithMarch 8, 2025April 16, 2023

What is Sun-In?

Sun-In is a bleach that permanently discolors the hair bringing out the “natural” highlights in your hair…

Now, you’re probably wondering how healthy this product is for your hair. Sun-In is not the best product to use on your hair. For hair that is light brown to blonde it does lighten it, however hair that is darker will only turn orange.

Usually Sun-In will lighten all the hair you have and not just highlights like it’s suppose to. If it doesn’t lighten your hair the way you want it to, the company recommends you reapply 1-6 times. This is a recommendation that as a stylist, having seen the effects of Sun-In with clients I would not recommend that you follow. Again, IT’S BLEACH, you are to never apply bleach to anyone’s hair more than twice at one time! That should never happen, in a salon or at home.

With Sun-In they recommend you don’t perm or color your hair for 4 weeks. I personally don’t recommend that you perm or color any of your hair that has Sun-In in it. In my experience, women who have permed their hair with Sun-In on it the hair broke off where the product had been applied.

As a stylist and color professional, I won’t even color or perm someones hair that has Sun-In on it unless we are cutting all sections of the hair with the Sun In product in it. If we colored or permed over the areas with Sun-In on it, the hair would break off or be so damaged that you’d have to cut it anyway.. while that sounds redundant the point needs a level of emphasis to understand the importance of why you don’t color or perm over this product.

Due to the metallics in Sun-In it doesn’t work well with salon/store bought chemicals. Although it may be tempting to try Sun-In because it’s quick and easy, don’t! You’re better off going to the salon and having it done the right way. Otherwise you’ll be paying more to have it fixed than you originally wanted to.

For your own sake, stay away from Sun-In. If you’ve already used it make sure you tell your stylist the next time you go to the salon, so that he/she can take the necessary steps to provide the best service possible.
